Forum Title: Amoxicillin Inquiry from the UK

Hi everyone! I’ve been prescribed amoxil (amoxicillin) for a bacterial infection. My GP didn’t prescribe it but recommended this antibiotic and said I could buy it over the counter in some pharmacies here in England. Anyone know where I can get this without a prescription? Thanks!

Hello HealthyHippo123,

It's important to understand that while some antibiotics might be available over the counter in certain countries, amoxicillin is typically only available with a prescription in England due to its classification as an antibiotic. Prescriptions ensure that it’s used correctly and doesn’t contribute to antibiotic resistance.

Thanks for the info, DoctorDerek. That's a bit disappointing since I thought it would be easier to get. Is there a reason why amoxicillin specifically needs a prescription?

You're welcome, HealthyHippo123.

Amoxicillin is prescribed to ensure that the antibiotic matches the specific infection you have and the dosage is correct. Improper use can lead to ineffective treatment and potential development of resistant bacteria strains. Plus, a doctor can rule out allergies or interactions with other medications you may be on.

That makes sense. I do have an appointment lined up for next week to see my GP about this infection, so maybe that’s the best route then?

Absolutely! Seeing your GP is the way to go. They can diagnose your condition accurately and prescribe amoxicillin if needed, along with clear instructions on dosage and duration of treatment. If it’s urgent, you might want to contact them sooner for an earlier appointment.

Got it, thanks so much DoctorDerek! I’ll make sure to see my GP next week and ask about amoxicillin then. Hopefully, the infection isn’t too severe by that time.
