Forum Topic: Prednisone Dosage Chart for Dogs

User1: PawsAndClaws

Hi everyone,

I've recently found out that my 8-year-old Golden Retriever has allergies and the vet prescribed prednisone. I'm a bit confused about the dosage chart provided to me. Could someone with experience explain it better or maybe share their own dog's dosage? My dog weighs around 70 lbs.

Thanks in advance!

Hi PawsAndClaws,

Firstly, it’s important to follow your vet’s advice closely, as they have evaluated your dog specifically. Prednisone is a corticosteroid commonly used for allergies and inflammatory conditions. Generally, the dosage can range from 0.5 mg per pound once daily to every other day, depending on severity.

For an 80 lb Golden Retriever (close to yours), a common starting dose might be around 25-30 mg twice daily or even less frequent if it’s for allergy season control. It's important to reduce the dosage and frequency as symptoms improve to minimize side effects.

Hope this helps!

Thank you, VetFriend! That’s a bit clearer now. My dog is currently on 20 mg twice daily. Do I need to worry about any specific side effects?

Hey PawsAndClaws,

Great question! Side effects can vary but include increased thirst and urination, lethargy, loss of appetite or overeating (leading to weight gain), diarrhea, and in some cases, behavioral changes. If you notice any severe symptoms like vomiting, extreme weakness, or signs of an infection (like a fever), contact your vet immediately.

Also, sudden discontinuation can lead to rebound effects because the body might not be producing enough natural corticosteroids yet. So always taper off under a vet’s supervision.

I'd add that monitoring your dog's behavior and health closely is key. If you notice any changes in appetite or energy levels, jot them down to discuss with the vet at follow-up visits. Also, keep an eye on any skin issues or infections that might arise due to reduced immune function.

Thank you all for your valuable insights! I'll be more vigilant about my dog's behavior and health now. It’s reassuring to have a clearer understanding of the dosage and potential side effects. Will keep an eye on any changes and report back to my vet if needed.

You're welcome, PawsAndClaws! Just remember that while prednisone can be very effective for managing certain conditions, it’s crucial to follow your vet's guidance closely. Keep the lines of communication open with them, especially as you adjust the dosage based on how well your dog responds.
