Forum Topic: Prednisone Dosage for Sinusitis

Hi everyone,

I've been struggling with sinusitis for a while now and my doctor recently prescribed me prednisone. He said to take it for about a week, but I'm not sure if the dosage he gave me is correct. Should I be taking 5 mg or can I go up to 10 mg?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello HealthSeeker87,

The dosage for prednisone in treating sinusitis can vary depending on the severity of your condition and how you respond to it. Typically, a dose range from 5 mg up to 40 mg per day is used. For mild cases like yours, starting with 10-20 mg once daily might be appropriate.

It's important not to exceed what has been prescribed by your doctor without consulting them first. The key here is to ensure you are getting the best treatment while minimizing potential side effects of long-term steroid use.

Let me know if this helps or if you need more detailed information!

Thanks, DoctorDude24! That's really helpful.

My doctor prescribed a daily dose of 5 mg for one week. I was worried it might not be enough since my sinusitis feels pretty bad. Should I take this dosage as prescribed or consider going up to 10 mg?

I don't want to overmedicate, but at the same time, I need relief!

Hi HealthSeeker87,

It sounds like you're dealing with a tough situation. Prednisone is definitely potent in reducing inflammation and can be very effective for sinusitis.

However, it's crucial to follow the dosage prescribed by your doctor. Starting at a lower dose of 5 mg per day for one week might help reduce swelling without causing significant side effects. If you don't see improvement within this timeframe or if symptoms worsen, you should revisit your healthcare provider for further evaluation and possible adjustment.

Over-the-counter remedies like nasal sprays and saline rinses can also be beneficial to use alongside prednisone. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids as well!

Hi HealthSeeker87,

NurseKnowsBest is right on the money. Starting with a lower dose and gradually increasing it if necessary under medical supervision is generally a good approach.

Prednisone can have some side effects, including mood changes, sleep disturbances, and increased appetite, so it’s important to monitor these closely. If you feel like 5 mg isn't providing enough relief after the prescribed course, definitely talk to your doctor about adjusting the dosage.

Remember that sinusitis often improves with other supportive care measures such as steam inhalation, staying hydrated, and using humidifiers.

Take care and hope you start feeling better soon!

Thank you so much DoctorDude24 and NurseKnowsBest! I appreciate your detailed responses.

I’ll stick with the 5 mg for now and see how it goes. Hopefully, some steam inhalation and saline rinses will help as well. Fingers crossed!
